A challenging task to appreciate countless embedded elements.

I will be very honest with you; I am not a fan of Gothic Metal, period. While there have been albums/bands from that genre that have caught my attention, there have been others that simply don’t do it for me.  There have been plenty of reasons behind my displeasure, whether it may be the overproduction, excessive amounts of elements that make me lose the attention, overwhelming keyboard sections, you name it. But, hey, I have thought to myself that I cannot judge without giving a shot to bands of that style, so here I am reviewing the latest opus from Sirenia.

The opener, “In Styx Embrace” has some good riffs as well as a potent chorus section, accompanied by female, operatic vocals. The masculine voices have this aggressive vibe to them, but there are moments when the keyboards don’t do it for me. They get buried with the overwhelming effects and vocals, but it is in the quieter moments when they stand out, as well as with the acoustic guitars.

“Into the Night” has a quiet and melodious piano section, before the guitars and vocals make an act of presence. Here, the guitars have a groovy feeling, accentuated by an energetic guitar solo.  The combination of masculine and feminine operatic vocals compliments the music, making this track enjoyable, with the drums adding the groove and classic piano lines wrapping things up.

“Love like Cyanide” has this romantic and classy vibe to it with poppy melodies spread throughout the track, but surprise surprise; the album has a section where the guitar riffs evoke a somewhat sad feeling, only to give way to the choruses and closing it with a classical string section.

The track “Nos heures sombres” has some strange effects and this is where I have noticed that the bass stands out, mainly in the quieter sections. Here, the tempo slows down and this song has a groovy feeling, where the great vocal variations set a nice mood, not shying away from catchiness.

In contrast, “The Voyage” starts with a somewhat aggressive guitar section, accompanied by slow but captivating drums. Vocally, there is a sense of sadness, and I noticed that at certain moments, the sadness of the vocals was almost being replicated by the drums. But those effects and samples are a little bit irritating. I think that in this track, the combination of guitar work and drums, as well as the vocals, could’ve been more than sufficient, but the operatic vocals are just a little too much.

The last three tracks commit, in my opinion, the crime of overkill. I felt as if the tracks had way too much going on in them, that there were instants when I just wanted the band to stick to good riffs and the occasional melodic section but they added, in my opinion, lots of unnecessary elements for the sake of adding a majestic touch.

To sum it up, this record is not that bad, per se, but it does have a fair share of flaws. Again, I feel as if the inclusion of excessive elements, such as the samples, monumental operating vocals and extending some of the tracks for far too long make it a hard and exhausting to hear. "Arcane Astral Aeons" it must listen with plenty of time due to the magnitude because it might take a while for you to be able to absorb and noticed all the things that are taking place at the same time.

“King” Captures an overwhelming wall of sound composed by symphonic elements and crucial metal parts to contrast

Italians Fleshgod Apocalypse they have released their fourth full length, "King" and as you can imagine they still in the same vein, composing some of the most devastating symphonic technical death metal over the world, in less than a decade, this band has earned a place in the acceptance of a countless followers, why? well the answer falls directly in their sumptuous discography, their debut album "Oracles" released in 2009, set the ground for Fleshgod Apocalypse for their innovative blend of Neo-classical style and relentless death metal, later on in 2011 came back again with "Agony" having a better production than their previous album and is here where they are fearless to integrate more orchestral elements, in 2013 "Labyrinth" sees the daylight with a more cohesive songwriting, dynamic and brutal, with all these extenuating it is easy to distinguish Fleshgod Apocalypse among others.

Their newest record as well as its predecessors possesses their distinctive trademark, "King" is another conceptual album, and tells the story of a king who has many problems in dealing with his court, they try to gain control on him and take power, but this king remains positive while he is trying to keep the sovereign together, he tries to do things with integrity and tries to keep his values, this story sounds very familiar if we transfer to our modern life.

"Marche Royale" masterfully opens the album with a powerful orchestration, is a little preamble for what's heading to you, followed by "In Aeternum" captures an overwhelming wall of sound composed by symphonic elements and crucial metal parts to contrast, while the clean vocals are piercing yours ears and without mercy, gears up to the crushing "Healing Through War" the guitar riff here are more abundant and heavy, and the wind ensemble subtly slay the air, "The Fool" is one of the most extreme technical cuts incorporating piano structures and choirs, with complex and aggressive drumming, next is "Cold as Perfection" is daring, slower pace with dark ambience and clean female vocals resounds in the incomprehensive chaos, to the end an outstanding guitar solo which eventually get lost in the spiral of chaos followed by "Mitra". The beauty of the inconceivable comes with "Paramour (Die Leidenschaft bringt Leiden)" a classical piano composition with mesmerizing female vocals, prepares for "And the Vulture Beholds" and "Gravity" delivers the most fastest riffage and delves once again in an orderly chaos with exceptional string arrangements, "A Million Deaths" is bombastic, opulent and heavier riff falls into a ungovernable frenzy, the band emphasize in more piano melodies rather than complex brutality, "Syphilis" approaches us to the end with a nightmarish vibe, melodramatic and somber crushing riff brings the subtle agony when least expected, the last track is "King" is a piano instrumental track memorable as well passionate to end tragically.

The Italian pioneers of extreme Symphonic Technical Death metal, recorded their album in 16th Cellar Studios and Kick Recording Studio in Rome Italy, the Mixing and mastering at Fascination Street Studio in Örebro, Sweden by Jens Borgen, at the end was a very addictive and theatrical dose of extreme metal, robust in symphonic elements well balanced with outrageous metal parts, vocally impressive, "King" is an album that worth the time to listen and enjoy.

Sammet and company are back with a thunderous and majestic power metal opera

Avantasia the newest album "Ghostlights" turns to be almost unavoidable and challenging at the same time to review, Tobias Sammet and company are back again with their seventh full length plagued with their power metal opera, always accompanied by prominent names in the metal scene such Sharon den Adel, Michael Kiske, Dee Snider, and Geoff Tate just to mention few of them, their sound is essentially a exhibit unrestricted of pretentious musicianship, their quality goes far beyond of what words can express and definitely one of the best shows of metal opera that can be seen these days.

It is probably that many people will argue that "Ghostlights" it lands far away from their mighty opus "The Metal Opera" debut album released back in 2001, or get stranded between "Angel of Babylon" in 2010 and "The Mystery of Time" in 2013, but certainly I can say "Ghostlights" has its own personality, they sound so fresh, so powerful and so passionate, delivering an exciting and complex recording, this time Avantasia took their time to reroute what was missing or over produced, in their latest works avoiding the big orchestral arrangements, as in "The Mystery of Time" they incurred or the excessive ballads to mid-pace shown in "The Scarecrow" and last but not least to mention the lack of metallic edge in "Angel of Babylon"; Well! I believe they succeeded this time bringing something more varied, intense and memorable.

The first track to blast the speakers off is "Mystery of a Blood Red Rose" with a great semi-fast pace riff, contagious choruses and a beautiful guitar solo, it works really good as a preamble to the epic and longest track in the album "Let the Storm Descend Upon You" slightly over twelve minutes with special guest in vocals by Jørn Lande (Jorn), Robert Mason  (Warrant), Ronnie Atkins (Pretty Maids), this track is quite impressive for the huge amount of moods stamped in it, the metallic edge blended with the orchestral arrangements, make this one an essential to listen, "The Haunting" comes unexpected as a storyteller and slow-paced while Dee Snider (Twisted Sister), brings his powerful vocals to this project, "Seduction of the Day" let Geoff Tate (Queensrÿche) to deliver his ostentatious vocal display and of course well appreciated, every track so far let the guest vocalist shine in their own, for me there is no doubt Tobias while he focus in his songwriting, he is able to visualize the singer, it is simply awesome, "Ghostlights" supply the proper dose of power metal that everybody is waiting for the guest vocalist in this track are Michael Kiske (Helloween) and once again the raspy vocals of Jørn Lande, "Draconian Love" is a powerful ballad that exploits with a catchy keyboard and low tune riff to add a depressive feeling which allows to elevate the track with exciting guitars plagued in choruses and the battling vocals between Tobias Sammet and Herbie Langhans (SinBreed) are impressive, "Master of the Pendulum" features Marco Hietala (Nightwish) his fearless and relentless voice takes over the heaviest track in the album, here you can appreciate one of the best guitar solos they could achieved, "Isle of Evermore" is a slow-paced ballad with no other than sweet Sharon Den Adel (Within Temptation) she lends some of the pop style vocals which has been prevailed in her latest recordings, somehow I think they owe us a climax with this track.

"Babylon Vampyres" Sammet goes alone on his own, with fast and sharp riff, pounding drums and catchy melodies, "Lucifer" a stunning track featuring Jørn Lande who is set free to deliver his most brilliant interpretation in the album, "Unchain the Light" is definitely the catchy track in the whole album counting once again with the stellar appearances of Ronnie Atkins and Michael Kiske, excellent guitar work and impressive solo unleashes the adrenaline, "A Restless Heart and Obsidian Skies" brought aboard guest vocalist Bob Catley, the song sounds epic, but a little misplaced, nothing wrong with guest vocalist, but unfortunate to listen this as closing track, the 2CD Digibook includes a bonus track entitled "Wake up to the Moon" and simply can't understand it sounda overdone, dwelling in some generic formula.

The hard part of this album falls in the length by itself the 2CD Digibook version last about 75 minutes, plus 59 minutes the live section, is not easy to devour thirteen tracks at once, you will need patience to really go all the way down to understand what Tobias Sammet and company just made, their power metal opera has emerged again and has been captured all its glory in this album, "Ghostlights" is simply awesome, all the parts blend together with smooth transitions and incorporation of orchestral and metal making this an unique experience.

Stay True… Stay Metal… Stay Brutal...

Symphonic dark metal meets with an overwhelming, decadent, dark ambiance

Armaga the Symphonic Gothic Doom metal band hailing from Moscow, Russia; they have been around since beginings of 2008, originally formed by guitarist Andrey Vasiunin and bassist Evgeniy Schetinov they recruited drummer Evgeniy Krishtal and vocalist Oleg Sobolevskiy, with this line-up they released the first two recordings; their debut album "In the Ruins" in 2009 and the second one titled "Dark Authority" in 2010, before their third effort was released came over some significative line-up, changes, taking over the drums Dmitriy Kovalyov and vocalist Sergey Morozov, so "Mystic" was released in 2012 and few months ago, their fourth full length titled "From Black Abyss" all of them under Molot Records, Armaga plays a unique style of Symphonic Dark metal as they describe themselves, the album contains eleven tracks of superb quality.

There is no doubt about this guys how they has matured through the years, "From Black Abyss" has become the most outstanding release to date, here you can appreciate a near perfect orchestration, riff that shatter the ice, a majestic bass and bombastic blast that linger in your memory for a while, everything here is well structured, every pace, every melody, every ambience created surpass the expectations.

The first track "Monarchy of Darkness" opens with a suitable orchestration that prevails along the cut, the riff are heavy while the harsh vocals blends perfectly, close the 2:30 mark is a cello interlude that fade away as the riff goes back, the following track "Silhouette" was their first single, this is one of the best not only for the riff but keep up with the intensity, the bass lines infused their own personality and Sergey Morozov delivers growls with such power, next is the self titled track "From Black Abyss" which it was built, with heavy grooves is energetic and fast, "Stronghold" reminds me the intensity of Dimmu Borgir at "Death Cult Armageddon" era, the Symphonic elements are precise and devastating as a preamble to the apocalypse, "Dust" was the second single that they promoted, every song has their own key on this track I might suggest the clarinet become essential for the instrumentation, "Athame" is the fastest piece of the album, demolishing drums and a piano melody, blast your speakers and the shrieking vocals battling over the growl vocals, while the ruthless riff tear apart any trace of compassion, the last track is "Moments" this is an instrumental track, with excellent piano section and violin to add an overwhelming, decadent and dark ambiance.

Despite their catchy melodies, the powerful riff and excellent orchestration, I am afraid to say that "From Black Abyss", is good by itself, but doesn't offer nothing that we haven't heard before, but if you are into Symphonic metal, you might want to check this out, it really worth the time to listen them, the production is clear enough to experience every instrument and that is something that really make this album stand out from the bunch of other albums.

Stay True… Stay Metal… Stay Brutal...

"King of Kings" denotes a fascinating part of the Norse mythology with exuberance and pride

Leaves' Eyes the female fronted Symphonic metal band released their sixth album "King of Kings" a few months ago, but before we delve deep into this album is mandatory to do a background check, the band started around 2003 after the departure of Liv Kristine from her previous band Theatre of Tragedy and then the entire lineup of Atrocity joined forces with her to create the project Leaves' Eyes and today's one of the most respected bands within the sub genre.

"Lovelorn" their debut album was released back in 2004, "Vinland Saga" in 2005, "Njord" during 2009, "Meredead" in 2011 and "Symphonies of the Night" almost by the end of 2013, all of them under Austrian label Napalm Records, their latest album "King of Kings" was released by AFM Records, the album was recorded, mixed and mastered at Mastersound Studio in Steinheim, Germany; the current lineup is Liv Kristine in vocals, Alexander Krull in keyboards and backing vocals, Thorsten Baver in guitars, Joris Nijenhuis in drums and Pete Streit in guitar.

Leaves' Eyes is one of those few bands that time gives them skills and wisdom while song writing, blending perfectly heavy melodies and lyrical content, to project a solid idea of how it should sound Symphonic metal nowadays and the addition of Folk elements make it even bold, choruses to sing along and catchy riff throw the hooks to engage you in an Norse odyssey plagued of historical events brought back to life, "Kings of Kings" differ conceptually from its predecessor, "Symphonies of the Night" here they recall some of their classic albums such "Njord" or even "Vinland Saga", but distant by itself, due to the maturity gained through the years and I'm talking about them individually, because you have to keep in mind that Liv Kristine has been around since the early nineties and Atrocity since mid eighties, so there is plenty experience to pull out an album like "King of Kings"

"Sweven" opens the album, with a subtle folk intro that ends with a spoken section in Norwegian, "King of Kings" is rapidly linked with choruses coming from afar and suddenly Liv Kristine voice appears, melodic, sweet with her classic high pitch and Alexander Krull delivers deep growls to contrast, everything here sounds perfect, crushing guitar riff by Thorsten Baver complemented by Joris Nijenhuis with a solid drumming section, "Halvdan the Black" is the first single and sounds heavy, energetic and powerful along with the previous track immediately become epic ones of the album, "The Waking Eye" is the latest single of the album, here they stretch out and missing a little bit the Folk ambiance that predominated, but does not mean it's bad at all, it has heavy and catchy riff that characterize Leaves' Eyes, "Feast of the Year", "Vengeance Venom" and the last track "Swords in Rock", are played with a single structure but the Folk parts induced, highlights each one in a unique manner, "Sacred Vow" speeds up being the fastest track of the album, blasting drums and choruses exceptional by the choir ensemble London Voices, "Edge of Steel" featuring Simone Simons from Epica, offers an extraordinary orchestration, sharp riff and stunning drums the battling vocals between Simone with her angelic voice and low growls of Alexander is amazing, "Haraldskvæði" is a Folk ballad based in a Norwegian poem dated of the 9th century written by Þorbjörn Hornklofi which consists of a conversation between an unnamed valkyrie and a raven; the two discuss the life and martial deeds of Harald Fairhair, "Blazing Waters" featuring Lindy-Fay Hella from Wardruna this track sounds more oriented to the Pagan concept at the beginning, turning to dynamic guitar riff and galloping bass with a superb guitar solo, Alexander Krull dominates with growl vocals while Lindy-Fay Hella and the choir ensemble London Voices chant in the background, indubitably "King of Kings" brings an eleven tracks each one with their own personality.

"King of Kings" denotes a fascinating part of the Norse mythology with exuberance and pride, the album by itself is fascinating from beginning to end, it has everything a diehard fan of Symphonic metal wishes, lots of powerful riff, excellent orchestration, great vocals and exquisites choruses, but the key is the Folk passages well embedded, this is what set Leaves' Eyes as true leaders right next to Nightwish within the sub genre.

Stay True… Stay Metal… Stay Brutal...

Melodic death metal with folk passages harmonized by strong and powerful female vocals

Berserker is a Lithuanian band formed in the capital city Vilnius in the beginning of 2009, they play a Melodic Death metal with some Folk passages, the band is currently integrated by vocalist Agnieška Volček, bassist Roman Semionov, guitarist and backing vocals Kšištof Jusel, keyboardist Kristina Herman, drummer Georgijus Kirilovas and guitarist Mažvydas Vrubliauskas, I have to mention that Agnė Petruškevičiūtė and Vera Bukina played the keybords and flute respectively, however, both departed from the band, after the recording. My first impression when I started to listen to Berserker was like somehow I was able to transport myself in one of those mythic battlefields where mankind has to fight for their own destiny, against themselves, against their own demons, where despair is ruthless, dejected by the darkness that haunts them, while gnawing their own fear and the battlefield is tinged with blood, but at the end mankind prevails, thanks to the courage of few ones who risk and expose their inner and give, a new beginning to mankind.

So with such an apocalyptic vision, I prepare myself to dive into Berserker recording, the first track is an "Intro" in the vein of a pure epic movie, that work really good for me, because set my mind for what's coming, a whole load of musicianship that achieve to move some sensitive cells, the second track is the self titled album "Dark Worlds Collide" here is where things turn up interesting a melody keyboard opens follow by thunderous drums and a galloping bass, while guitars sounds are present to hear a beautiful voice shining, the music is extraordinary, but Agnieška voice is strong and powerful, please don't expect the classic symphonic voice like Tarja or Simone, Agnieška she has her own attributes, the backing vocals are present only to give her deeper accent, "Warhell" start with a war soundtrack which allow the marching drums appear, while the flute added a subtle touch to keep the guitar galloping pace, mesmerizing vocals makes this cut very intense, growl vocals that lead to a subsequent guitar solo well executed, "Madness Machine" the folkish guitar riff in the album accompanied by the sweet flute, builded with simple but effective, musical structures to allow a perfect synchronization between clean vocals and guitar riff, next is "The Day Human Died" an explosive track from the beginning where dynamics change a little bit, creating a subtle battle between clean vocals and harsh vocals, where the listeners wins at the end, the guitars comes with sharp riff, aiming to perpetuate in the time, "Wolf" is a powerful ballad filled with emotions that puts you in a dimension where you are vulnerable, but proves their versatility, "Prelude" is a shores soundtrack, waves hitting the wall of rocks, the wind blowing while thunders lights the skies, only to make way for two of the best tracks from this album "Viking Ship" starts with a folk intro to move you to something easy to recognize in the vein of Amon Amarth riff and the folk passages of Finntroll with the furious vocals of the valkyrie Agnieška, the guitars plays at galloping pace faster, harder while the story is being told and it blends with a sweet flute.

The closing track is "Mūšis už Žemę" which means "(Battle for Earth)" completely sung in lithuanian and for that reason should not be underestimated, this track makes a clear statement, that metal may sound unrelenting even in their own language of origin, basically the last track falls in the same scheme, prolonging the ecstasy, created by Berserker; The album was recorded and mixed in Muzikos Laboratorija studio by Rimtautas Piskarskas.

To finish my review I want to emphasize the quality and level that show Berserker regarding their songwriting, producing a solid, strong debut album and will surely enter more than one list of the best albums of the year.

Stay True... Stay Metal... Stay Brutal...
