They add a pretty malevolent aura to the songs.

This is the very first time I listen to Morbid Messiah, so I was not sure about what to expect about these guys, but just by reading the song titles, I knew that the lyrics were not going to be talking about cheerful or thought-provoking subject matter. The intro track, “Rise of the Rottenness” starts off with strange movie sample, while the guitar riffs create a sinister atmosphere, before breaking up with a destructive musical assault in the form of “Charred Devastation”. This is the first introduction to the vocals, which not only combine the guttural aggression but are a little bit undecipherable.

Curiously enough, I feel as if the vocals act as another instrument themselves because their low frequency serves to add a pretty malevolent aura to the songs themselves. It’s as if you were descending through an abyss, and the vocals serve as a conduit to your ultimate demise, and while you are descending, your head was being tormented by the chants of agonizing victims. Yes, you read right. That’s the type of atmosphere that the vocals create.

When it comes to the guitar work, I have noticed that the guitar tune is pretty low, but again, this serves to a greater purpose, and that is to infect the listener´s ears with darkness and brooding. Tempo-wise, the band does not go full-throttle, but wise-enough, they combine Doom-laden tempos with outbursts of speed, and even though the drum work does not resort to full blasting, they add a combination of atmospheric drumming with sonic assaults of mid-paced blast beats.

The guitar solos are placed on many compositions, and even though they are not overly technical or flamboyant displays of virtuosity, they have sufficient power and conviction to get you to bang your head with enthusiasm.

Production-wise, this is album is a little bit raw, especially with the guitar and drums. They have a natural sound to them, but it is not excessively raw or overproduced. The bass is mostly lost in the mix, but on tracks such as “Breath of the Ominous”, it gets a little chance to shine on its own in the introductory section.

Movie samples abound, and they are used effectively. For instance, the sample in “Breath of the Ominous” evokes a sense of malevolence, and with the combination of deadly riffing, it creates wonders for the listener.  When you think about movie samples, you might think about Mortician and the excessive amount of movie samples, but be sure that these guys do not rely on them at all.

To wrap it up, this is a fairly good release if you are into straight-forward, sinister Death Metal.  I think that they could benefit from better production work, but their focus on catchy and punishing riffs is worthy of your attention. Check them out!

Ten tracks of the most inhospitable, raw and perverse thoughts.

Mexican Death metal outfit Ravenous Death released their debut album entitled "Chapter of an Evil Transition" through the Spanish record label Memento Mori. The band plays a Death metal that is very influenced by the Swedish old school death metal bands like Entombed, Vomitory, Dismember and the Dutch Asphyx only to mention a few bands; However, I would compare their sound to the arising new generation of Swedish Death metal like Feral the reformed Entrails, Revolting.

The band was formed in 2016 and they rapidly started to work in songwriting for what became their EP "Ominous Deathcult," released independently in 2017, this record included five tracks being the self-titled track, what I would call a merciless, rotten and evil song in this record, Ravenous Death line-up consist of drummer Esteban Salcedo, guitarist Enrique Fray, vocalist Victor Mercado, and bassist Alejandro Méndez, you might not familiar with these names, but I can assure you, despite the short existence of the band, they are seasoned musicians and well recognized within the Mexican scene some were or still playing with bands such as Death's Forsaken, Remains, Demonic Manifestation, so don't be fooled.

"Chapter of an Evil Transition," the record contains ten tracks of the most inhospitable, raw and perverse thoughts. The album unfolds with a tenebrous and sinister concept, conceived only by a brilliant twisted mind, therefore, the music should be dark with a particular stench of death the initial track "Prelude to Evilness" delves you with a threatening melody and inaudible recited voices in the background. This set a haunting feeling, "Doomed to Exist" delivers an obliterating and ceaseless blast beat, the guitar riff is a perilous frontal assault full of hatred with the growls are nonstop and crushing. "Harvesting Hate" the vocalist Mercado basically spits out his lungs with such of infernal scream at the beginning, while the guitar sounds putrid and nauseating with a killer riffs, it's followed right away by "Evil Dementia (The Voices of the Nobodies" appeals to the same formula as the previous tracks, not for lack of inspiration, rather reinforce the morbid monstrosity that they have become, "Awakening of the Damned" grabs a brutal riff and builds from scratch an abominable entity that is brilliantly linked to the blistering drumming of Salcedo and the beastly growls at his best moment. For me, the best track of the album, "Cursed Origin" grants you another great opportunity to appreciate the varied songwriting achieved moving versatility from the fast and loud parts to the mid-pace and melodic grooves. "Initiation Ritual" takes a Grinding approach with a chaotic and furious pace where harmonies fade away and let the drums feast in total anarchism. "The Sinister Being" momentarily shifts things around once again with such great doomy passage at the beginning, but all the sudden they re-route into a brutal and heavier stage, this part reminds me a lot of the Dutch Asphyx with their Death doom style. "Massacre Cult" builds with a thrash-driven riff and punishing guitar solo that is very catchy and the snarling vocals fit perfectly while the rhythmic section provided by the bassist sounds demonic the drumming is simply fantastic the last track is "Soul Consumned by the Occult" have an ultra-fast riffing showcasing the whole malignancy within their souls, the drumming alike is an unstoppable machine gun without remorse that takes you directly to an unexpected and melodious end.

I believe that Ravenous Death despite dabbling into an oversaturated path, the outcome of their production can't be judged simply as another band. There are sustainable elements and creativity to welcome this band to more worldwide exposure, if you got the time, listen to them in "Chapters of an Evil Transition" that will definitely raise more than one eyebrow of amazement.

Serocs unchain the most extreme brutality.

Serocs has been grown beyond any expectation from being a mere solo project born in Guadalajara, Mexico to become in one of the most successful international partnership acts of Brutal Technical Death Metal that underground scene has seen in a long time, their style is very influenced by bands like Cryptopsy who's unfortunately are no longer in that musical line, Spawn of Possession who were split two years ago and the extinct and deeply missed Necrophagist, only to mention a few of them.

Serocs current formation consists of Antonio Freyre on guitars, Phil Tougas (Chthe'ilist) on guitars, Antoine Daigneault (Chthe'ilist) on bass, Kévin Paradis (Benighted) on drums and Laurent Bellemare (Basalte) on vocals "The Phobos / Deimos Suite" is an album composed by songs written during the last ten years. So, these tracks will be like a walk through their entire career and maybe this could be the secret that makes this album exciting.

"Being" opens this album despite being short is exuberant with a layered riff well-executed proving their technical skills the storming drum work stands out, "Thanatophobia" is the third track in the album and believe me, from the very first moment it sounds explosive and set the listeners into a whirlwind of endless aggression with a ruthless roaring, at a certain point is impossible not to hear their influences and all the sudden feel that refreshing wave taking over and "Oneirology" comes to be a truly delightful piece with pummeling drums and a deeper bass that offers an overwhelming  dynamism, the guitars deliver a slaughter well reinforced by the guttural vocals, "Lethe" create a unique atmosphere only to welcoming the next track "SCP-106" provides a great technical performance but the vocals are crushing then is followed by "Nonbeing" is brilliant and insane at the same time the gorgeous signature riff are eloquent and help to keep things spiced up towards the end, "Deimos" is an odyssey extremely well-conceived, the arrangements are fierce and again their technical skills are put to the test and the result is exceptional as brutal, riff that shatters and re-shape masterfully into a pragmatic chaos.

To sum up, Serocs has accomplished their best record so far, "The Phobos / Deimos Suite" holds a solid concept, the songwriting is faultless, the production is clean but stands out every instrument, everything here sounds neat, it turns hard to point out any flaws when these guys unchain the most extreme brutality and they pack it with the most refined technique, if you are a real follower of the style then this is an album you shouldn't miss.

Full of dark ambience and malice.

While I'm trying to recall respectful acts of black metal from Mexico, the first name that comes to my mind is Shub Niggurath obviously, but they are not the only ones, there are more bands like Sargatanas, Avzhia and then comes a very experienced band as Ereshkigal. They have been busy in recent years releasing album after album, all of them with such of quality and full of dark ambience and malice.

"Intolerance" it’s their tenth studio album, for your surprise and many others too, this band has been around since 1993 and they are still terribly underrated. Their black metal took influences from the second wave of black metal and they grew up evolving their own sound, in this album you can find out fast paced tracks that intertwine with melodies. The unholy picking tremolo riff and blasting drums, adding good instrumental passages to create the unsacred atmosphere to embrace your bleak soul.

Of course, you might think this album differs a lot from the latest Immortal release if you are taking that as your reference, you might right, but I'm sure both bands have a different approach to the black metal sound, but "Intolerance" stands up by its impious rawness up to its core.

Remarkable black metal rooted in hatred and evil

Let’s talk about a Mexican Black metal band Mordskog, they are from Mexico city, they were formed in 2003, early this year they brought to us their second full length called “XIII”. The sound of their music is obscure and blaspheme, which reminds me quite a lot the style of the early nineties Black metal scene, raw evil, negative, pure, corrosive and true, but clear at the same time and incorporating an excellent drum sound.

With a classic sound, without the need for so much technique or complicated riffs, they were able to create a feeling of hatred and evil… as how Black metal should be like. The vocals sound tearing and raw with a solid conviction to transmit all the hatred expressed in the lyrics. You need to get prepare to listen this raw Black metal band, if you are expecting to listen something melodic within Mordskog sound, then you might be disappointed.

This sick sound was created with dissonance, putrefaction and darkness… Suitable for followers of the early works of bands like Darkthorne, Craft, Krieg, Pest (Swe) and some others alike to the true Black metal sound.

“Lautum Novedialem” which is the title for the first track, starts with an arpeggio that has an eerie melancholy within, then you might think you’re about to listen another DSBM band, but no! You are wrong, it’s followed by a sick and dissonant riff that makes you delve into the immense evilness of the first track. The second track titled “Nascentes Morimur” takes you into an atmosphere full of darkness and evil falling in the classic structure of the nineties Black metal sound, with a very rhythmic riff at the beginning, followed by a dark and dissonant riff, this song takes you little by little into a feeling of hatred and desolation, only three riffs are just enough to make this track an unforgettable piece of raw Black metal. “Aequo Pulsat Pede” the third song, speak by itself, what else I could possible say? This is a sick and blaspheme track it reminds me the early works of Pest (Swe), the true connoisseurs of Black metal will know what I mean doing such comparison. “Pulvis Et Umbra” is the sickest track on this album, the drum work begins with an unconditional beat in its structure with a remarked influence of Mayhem in the riffing, something difficult to digest at first, but once you find the meaning, this rarity becomes mysteriously sublime and makes you play it over and over. “Mors Est Vitae Essentia” is the next track, this piece of darkness is the most rhythmic song, with riffs to make you bang your head from beginning to end. The sixth anthem “Ad Me Venite Mortui” is a piece of blasphemous Black metal with a classic style of riffing and beats adding vomiting and tearing vocals as a complement to this evocation, the acoustic end comes unpredictable. “C.A.M” is the name of the seventh track, I do not know the meaning of these acronyms… the only thing I know! Is the words I will use to describe this song; A Deathcult Invocation!!! Which drag you to the next psalm titled “Mors Vincit Omnia” is another crude Black metal piece, rhythmic, blasphemous and rotten with riffs that provoke a feeling of despair and hate, with some influence of Inquisition on the vocals, to finish this commendable work of contemporary raw Black metal, Mordskog delivers a last theme to make us very clear the message they tries to transmit throughout the whole album “Todos Ustedes Deben Morir Esta Noche” which translate as follow “All of you must die Tonight”, some kind of eerie passage good enough to break up any mortal.

Mordskog completed a great album worthy to spin in your player and explore another great band from around the world, the production is good enough, keeping the essential just to enhance the key parts in the composition, this album will calm down your anxiety for true Black metal without letting you down.
