Merciless from beginning to end that's how sound this devilish opus.

Erik Rutan and company return with their sixth sonic assault, aptly titled “Upon Desolate Sands” but, believe me, this is an album that will not accumulate dust in your shelf, not at all. Being very honest, I must say that I am not a huge fan of Hate Eternal, mainly because I have considered their previous work as being overproduced and lacking any emotion or catchiness. Nonetheless, this opus is filled with so many surprises, balancing the unmerciful onslaught of brutal riffs with a pretty dynamic showcase of superb drum work and solid basslines. So, let’s go ahead and take a much closer at what this album has to offer.

The opening track, “The Violent Fury” is just that: a relentless ass-whooping of catchy riffs and rapid drum work, while Erik Rutan furiously barks his commanding vocals, which, at times, can get lost in the background while the guitars and drums take centerpiece, occasionally allowing bassist Hannes Grossmann to delight us with his technical basslines, adding a nice touch to the composition.
“What Lies Beyond” opens in a slow and menacing style, as a prelude for what’s to come. I noticed in the opening riffs, the bass rears its ugly head, and then, the rapid riffing takes place, unleashing the aural assault where Erik combines velocity with a little bit of atmosphere, adding a sense of brooding, before delighting the ears with a great guitar solo. This is a great track that combines a mid-paced tempo with a great amount of speed.

“Vengeance Striketh” once again combines a mid-paced tempo, and the drum work has a “military march” pace to it, but the bass stands out on his own, coming out much clear and accompanying the onslaught of riffs. This track has an instrumental section that has a groovy feel to it, before deconstructing into heavier riffage. Vocally, Erik resorts to a dual vocal assault, which augments the aggression, and to top it off, the closing guitar solo, damn!  Pretty melodious but adds a great touch to this track to close it with style.

“Nothingness of Being”. This track starts off with a pretty sinister feeling to it, combining a somewhat slower pace in the guitars, but the rhythm section counters it with speed. This time, the drum work courtesy of J.J Hrubovcak is a little bit slower and focused on atmosphere, but the work with the double-bass is simply relentless, not slowing down for one bit.  We have another great guitar solo that emphasizes mood over a technicality, which closes this track efficiently.

“All Hope Destroyed”. My goodness, the name fits it perfectly. This track is hell-bent on punishing the listener with its avalanche of heavy riffage and hideous basslines. The riffs combine a great deal of technicality but believe me, the brutality is not sacrificed at all. Added on to that, the drum work is quite varied, combining bursts of speed with plenty of rolls and fills, to match perfectly with the onslaught. Here we have another guitar solo with a good dose of feeling and mood, to wrap it up quite nicely.

“Portal of Myriad” has a pretty strange sounding opening riff, only to break down into a destructive drumming assault. The riffs are quite ominous while the bass compliments the guitars, offering a dual assault of rhythm and mood. Early on the track, we have this moody guitar solo, while the drums slow down just enough for the bass to continue making an act of presence. As the album fades out, it takes a little pause to reprise the strange-sounding riffs of the earlier moments, only to brutalize you once again with its crushing guitar/drum attack.

“Dark Age of Ruin” more than makes up for its title. The opening sequence has an evil sounding guitar/bass combination, in order to make way for the blast-beat assault, which, in this occasion, seems to be focused on delivering as much punishment as possible. There are moments when the bass lines really add a great touch to enhance the song structures, and it is on the brief, but slow sections when it allows the listener to be impressed. The guitar solo on this track has a pretty groovy feel, paving the way for the ending section, which slows down a notch to wrap it up.

The title track starts in an ominous style, with a few feminine chants which set an eerie mood in order for a great assault in all senses, with the three instruments collaborating together to develop one of the strongest tracks of the whole album,  in order to close with an instrumental track, titled “For Whom We Have Lost”, which is nothing short of magnificent, due to its incredible and moody riffs.

To wrap it up, I sincerely believe that Hate Eternal have outdone themselves in this record. The combination of brutality, slow passages, varied and interesting drum work have created a monstrous record that does not shy away from being groovy as well. Production- wise, I think that there is vast room for improvement because, as I had stated before, sometimes the guitars and drums drown out the vocals, and the bass only appears on the slower sections, so I think that this instrument deserves much exposure. Erik and the boys are great musicians, but I think the production needs more improvement.

Too many ideas connected inappropriately, deceptive and volatile.

After Windir was disbanded due to the tragic end of vocalist and guitarist Valfar in 2004, I sincerely lost track about the other band members, I had to spend almost five years to realize that the former members of Windir had formed another band called Vreid and they already had four albums in their discography, "Milorg" was the album that helped me rediscover them. From that moment I assigned myself to the task of listening to all their previous works and I ended up very satisfied, then came albums like "V" and "Welcome Farewell" which were not disappointing at all and "Sólverv" was aiming at something different but somehow substantial.

Vreid’s eighth album titled “Lifehunger," from the beginning they anticipate you, this will get unusual as never before with a beautiful acoustic intro. "Flower & Blood" gives way to "One Hundred Years" with a sick black metal riff which delves increasingly into the rawness, but all the sudden the acoustic passage appears from nowhere breaking the built harmony. "Lifehunger" with excessive melodies and a black 'n' roll feel that doesn't withdraw the best of them, then comes "The Dead White" is it me or it sounds a lot more... like the track "Melancholia" of the Swedish band Tribulation? I guess it doesn't matter, "Hello Darkness"  just leaves me speechless, it is bland and at worst boring, "Black Rites in the Black Nights" and "Sokrates Must Die" both themes are tremendously inconsequential, with lack of ambition, "Heimatt" clearly represents what we would say hope never dies, I mean if they would have given us this level through all their entire album, we would be even more than grateful.

To sum it up, I like the evolution, as well as enjoying the brutal; However, "Lifehunger" in my opinion lacks of sense, too many ideas connected inappropriately, deceptive and volatile, this album is stepping between "not ready for this yet" and "didn't enjoy it or don't like it", my best guess right now is, it will take me a while to appreciate whatever they did, you are more than welcome to do the same, listen the album a couple of times and let's see how you react to them.

Stay True… Stay Metal… Stay Brutal…

Unrestricted and piercing old school death metal.

We got Carnation, a new death metal band originating in the Netherlands, introducing themselves with such a memorable debut album "Chapel of Abhorrence" containing eleven tracks dwelling within the old school death metal scene. A simple and straightforward discharge without compromise or remorse, their sound is rooted upon bands that arose at the beginning of the nineties such as Carnage, Dismember, Vader or Decapitated, these could describe Carnation's diversity.

Overall, "Chapel of Abhorrence" succeeded to pull together a brutal and some kind of melodic riff with an intense drum work and they don't restrain themselves at all, the vocals sounds like a real demon trapped in the studio spitting out a devilish conjure, song after song, tracks like the opener, "The Whisperer" engages your attention right away, "Hellfire" is tremendous and merciless and we can keep up adding more to the positive list.

However, the downside of this album comes again in the length combined with some slow-paced tracks like "Sermon of the Dead" or "Power Trip" exploring a variant, but not suitable due to the initial intensity shown during the first half of the album. Listen to the album and draw your own conclusions.

Remorseless and aggressive grindcore

After twenty-three years in the scene Rotten Sound doesn't show any sign of weakness, not even because they always has been playing one of the most confined and limited genres in the underground scene, the grindcore for some, is an endless chaotic mass of riffs, murky bass tunes and battering drums and you know what? Unequivocally, I think that is the best definitions everybody can conclude, every twist and tweaks depend on each band's approach to keep fresh, corrosive and true to its roots.

These Finnish have returned after five years and brings under their arm the seventh album in their career, which they have entitled "Abuse to Suffer" which is slightly over thirty-two minutes of their remorseless and aggressive grindcore as only they know how to do, incredible production, abrupt and heavy riffs, intense blast beats, abrasive bass and guttural vocals are few of the attributes I can attach to this grindcore devotees.

Rotten Sound unfolds their wrath from the beginning with the first theme "Lazy Asses" a blend of cathartic and disharmonic riffs, "Fear of Shadows" throws some groovy riffs at mid pace, while "Time for the Fix" with its infectious riff extends the groovy feeling to create a complex, yet chaotic counterbalance after half way to the end, "Brainwashed" with its distorted hardcore-punk influenced, knock down any conventional structure implied, "Yellow Pain" brings a nauseating sludge pace with under tune riffing, "The Clerk" it's a straight assault that refuses to veer from their hardened formula, "Retaliation" it's a fast and furious onslaught with buzzing guitars and brutal drum pattern, "Extortion and Blackmail" rapidly engage the listener with unmatched violence, but suddenly turns into a massive groove that thrives into a noisy scheme, followed by "Equal Rights" It has a very consistent rhythm section alike the Scandinavian death metal bands, crushing blast beats and shattering vocals, leads to the last track "Someone Weak" sonically slows down with heavier guitar riffs, bone crushing drums and powerful growl vocals.

"Abuse To Suffer" it’s a clear statement of what grindcore is about, many of their hard die fans will agree with me, despite the lack of innovation Rotten Sound offers a solid album, varied in content and able to break necks; Do not hesitate if you like bands like Nasum, Napalm Death or Gadget then do not waste your time.

Gives you that atmosphere of evil and devastation that ensures to be memorable

Deströyer 666 is one of the few bands who has reached a cult status, hailing originally from Melbourne, Australia and currently located in London, United Kingdom, the black thrash metal act, is giving signs of life after a period of seven years absence in the studio, when they released their previous album "Defiance" which won an endless rigorous criticism, according to the press by making a slight change compared to their first three albums, but let's move on with what really matters today’s, I'm here to talk about "Wildfire" the fifth album of Deströyer 666, this record essentially has the rawness of vocals, infectious tunes and ripping riffage and conjoined gives you that atmosphere of evil and devastation that ensures to be memorable.

For some reason I have been always thinking of Deströyer 666 as the band who reminds me the old Venom, with their catchy fast riffage, powerful drums and excruciating vocals, that snatch a devilish smile from me and how not? If "Wildfire" highlights many of the elements and qualities that shone on albums like "Raising Phoenix" released in 2000, solidifying their extreme sound or the majestic "Cold Steel ... for an Iron Age" published in 2002 perfecting their intense and malevolent formula of blackened thrash metal.

"Wildfire" somehow has the ability to recreate the adrenaline that flowed at the beginning of the noughties, the opening track "Traitors" with an Araya's-sequel scream and infectious riffage let the hellish assault leaded by K.K. Warlust began, the drums comes in a burst like a storm the track is very fast and merciless, "Live and Burn" still in the same vein every time exposing that rawness they carried with themself, vocals are heavier and chorus works great showcasing a frantic vigor and guitar solos that are able to prickled your skin, then is followed by the instrumental "Artiglio Del Diavolo" which focus on a standard guitar work passing unnoticed in some way, "Deathblow" is another exciting track in this album, seems like every single fast riffing track owns the hooks to get your attention, "Hymns to Dionysus" is fully structure in a melody that stuck in your head, while the ceaseless blast beat drumming excels in this track, "Wildfire" apart to be the first official single that came out, delves in poisonous riff a solid rhythm section and if you have never heard this band before, well this could be a good start, the track is somehow accessible, but still thunderous, the closing tracks are "Die You Fucking Pig!" lyrically a clear statement anti religion, bizarre riffing from the beginning to the end, "Taman Shud" take a different approach with a medium pace the guitar work here is outstanding from simple chords to a superb solo that linger within you, while the track is splitted in two sections due to the use of an interlude that slowdown a bit with undistorted guitar work and a fine drum patterns to reach the highest point of the track and go down again in a subtle manner with stunning choruses work.

I feel incomplete, I don't mean I didn't like how they ended up, but after such overflow of energy, by the end I still have running a lot of blood through my veins, this album have no fillers at all, while some track doesn't make the same effect of the others neither unbalance the rest, I think this album makes an enjoyable  reconciliation with old fans and presents a material with a refreshing sound, "Wildfire" was recorded, mixed and masterized at The Underworld Studios, by Laurent Teubl allowing a clear production where you can hear each instrument, don't let pass the opportunity to listen this album a blackened thrash metal a clear contender for the end year list.

Stay True… Stay Metal… Stay Brutal...

The sound captured in "Rituals" is cohesive and bizarre

Undoubtedly the Greeks Rotting Christ are an iconic band within the genre of metal music, with twenty-nine years in their backs and eleven previous recordings, they throw us their newest production entitled "Rituals", containing eleven cuts very heavy, dark and loaded of cryptic ambience, very ritualistic as it asserts the title of the album by itself, this is an album hard to swallow in a single night once you hit the play button you better be patience to listen song by song until the end with the most open mind to perceive what they have been trying to play for the last decade an unusual blend of extreme, obscure and simplistic metal.

There is nothing wrong with such formula, but over the years tends to be something not surprising at all, the songwriting excels in few songs retaining your attention and for a couple of minutes banishes the monotonous and repetitive sound, due to the pungent riffage, disturbing drums and throaty vocals, the Gregorian chants add a dark vibe and mythic.

The sound captured in "Rituals" is cohesive and bizarre from the beginning you can appreciate it "In Nomine Dei Nostri" with rigorous fluid and crude recited prose immerses you in a dense and macabre atmosphere, "Ze Nigmar" it just extends in the same vein as the previous track with more corrosive guitar work, it is followed by "Elthe Kyrie" fast riffage since the beginning turns to be very infectious with the decadence inflicted and therefore, this is the most catchy cut in the album, saturated in melodies and powerful vocals well mixed with female clean vocals of Danai Katsameni she is an actress of the National Hellenic Theater and she owns the piece in a unique way and leads to excellent guitar solo, I will skip few song just to land in "Les Litanies De Satan" is structured with slow riffing and fast marching drumming, infusing an aggressive sense that allows Vorph (Samael) to infringe raw vocals in french, "For a Voice Like a Thunder" featuring Nick Holmes (Paradise Lost) delivering astonishing spoken words in the background interwoven with the relentless guitar riffing and compact drumming to induce the catharsis, "Devadevam" stand out for the use of Hindu style melodies blended with some kind of atmospheric black metal and embedding of the pseudo Gregorian choirs, "The Four Horsemen" you might think is a cover of the classic Metallica repertoire, but definitely is not! is a mid pace track with somber elements marauding between doom like passages and eerie ambient sound effects beautifully crafted but distant and omnipresent, the closing track is "Lok'tar Ogar" which work more as a filler for me, for the repetitive elements already mentioned.

Tolis Brother's and company has delivered an album that barely reach what I could describe above average, lacking dynamics and repetitive at some point, with a handful of decent tracks that worth the time to listen, I still missing the Rotting Christ of yore and I still playing very often their four first releases, however if you like what they have been playing during the last ten years, I'm sure you will disagree with me and I will be happy if that happen.

Stay True… Stay Metal… Stay Brutal...
