A challenging task to appreciate countless embedded elements.

I will be very honest with you; I am not a fan of Gothic Metal, period. While there have been albums/bands from that genre that have caught my attention, there have been others that simply don’t do it for me.  There have been plenty of reasons behind my displeasure, whether it may be the overproduction, excessive amounts of elements that make me lose the attention, overwhelming keyboard sections, you name it. But, hey, I have thought to myself that I cannot judge without giving a shot to bands of that style, so here I am reviewing the latest opus from Sirenia.

The opener, “In Styx Embrace” has some good riffs as well as a potent chorus section, accompanied by female, operatic vocals. The masculine voices have this aggressive vibe to them, but there are moments when the keyboards don’t do it for me. They get buried with the overwhelming effects and vocals, but it is in the quieter moments when they stand out, as well as with the acoustic guitars.

“Into the Night” has a quiet and melodious piano section, before the guitars and vocals make an act of presence. Here, the guitars have a groovy feeling, accentuated by an energetic guitar solo.  The combination of masculine and feminine operatic vocals compliments the music, making this track enjoyable, with the drums adding the groove and classic piano lines wrapping things up.

“Love like Cyanide” has this romantic and classy vibe to it with poppy melodies spread throughout the track, but surprise surprise; the album has a section where the guitar riffs evoke a somewhat sad feeling, only to give way to the choruses and closing it with a classical string section.

The track “Nos heures sombres” has some strange effects and this is where I have noticed that the bass stands out, mainly in the quieter sections. Here, the tempo slows down and this song has a groovy feeling, where the great vocal variations set a nice mood, not shying away from catchiness.

In contrast, “The Voyage” starts with a somewhat aggressive guitar section, accompanied by slow but captivating drums. Vocally, there is a sense of sadness, and I noticed that at certain moments, the sadness of the vocals was almost being replicated by the drums. But those effects and samples are a little bit irritating. I think that in this track, the combination of guitar work and drums, as well as the vocals, could’ve been more than sufficient, but the operatic vocals are just a little too much.

The last three tracks commit, in my opinion, the crime of overkill. I felt as if the tracks had way too much going on in them, that there were instants when I just wanted the band to stick to good riffs and the occasional melodic section but they added, in my opinion, lots of unnecessary elements for the sake of adding a majestic touch.

To sum it up, this record is not that bad, per se, but it does have a fair share of flaws. Again, I feel as if the inclusion of excessive elements, such as the samples, monumental operating vocals and extending some of the tracks for far too long make it a hard and exhausting to hear. "Arcane Astral Aeons" it must listen with plenty of time due to the magnitude because it might take a while for you to be able to absorb and noticed all the things that are taking place at the same time.

Symphonic dark metal meets with an overwhelming, decadent, dark ambiance

Armaga the Symphonic Gothic Doom metal band hailing from Moscow, Russia; they have been around since beginings of 2008, originally formed by guitarist Andrey Vasiunin and bassist Evgeniy Schetinov they recruited drummer Evgeniy Krishtal and vocalist Oleg Sobolevskiy, with this line-up they released the first two recordings; their debut album "In the Ruins" in 2009 and the second one titled "Dark Authority" in 2010, before their third effort was released came over some significative line-up, changes, taking over the drums Dmitriy Kovalyov and vocalist Sergey Morozov, so "Mystic" was released in 2012 and few months ago, their fourth full length titled "From Black Abyss" all of them under Molot Records, Armaga plays a unique style of Symphonic Dark metal as they describe themselves, the album contains eleven tracks of superb quality.

There is no doubt about this guys how they has matured through the years, "From Black Abyss" has become the most outstanding release to date, here you can appreciate a near perfect orchestration, riff that shatter the ice, a majestic bass and bombastic blast that linger in your memory for a while, everything here is well structured, every pace, every melody, every ambience created surpass the expectations.

The first track "Monarchy of Darkness" opens with a suitable orchestration that prevails along the cut, the riff are heavy while the harsh vocals blends perfectly, close the 2:30 mark is a cello interlude that fade away as the riff goes back, the following track "Silhouette" was their first single, this is one of the best not only for the riff but keep up with the intensity, the bass lines infused their own personality and Sergey Morozov delivers growls with such power, next is the self titled track "From Black Abyss" which it was built, with heavy grooves is energetic and fast, "Stronghold" reminds me the intensity of Dimmu Borgir at "Death Cult Armageddon" era, the Symphonic elements are precise and devastating as a preamble to the apocalypse, "Dust" was the second single that they promoted, every song has their own key on this track I might suggest the clarinet become essential for the instrumentation, "Athame" is the fastest piece of the album, demolishing drums and a piano melody, blast your speakers and the shrieking vocals battling over the growl vocals, while the ruthless riff tear apart any trace of compassion, the last track is "Moments" this is an instrumental track, with excellent piano section and violin to add an overwhelming, decadent and dark ambiance.

Despite their catchy melodies, the powerful riff and excellent orchestration, I am afraid to say that "From Black Abyss", is good by itself, but doesn't offer nothing that we haven't heard before, but if you are into Symphonic metal, you might want to check this out, it really worth the time to listen them, the production is clear enough to experience every instrument and that is something that really make this album stand out from the bunch of other albums.

Stay True… Stay Metal… Stay Brutal...

Dark ambience to enrapture your soul

Tearless is a band formed in Ivanec Lepoglava in Croatia, they started around 2003 and since then they have been very active, releasing four demos, the first one is "Reverie" in 2005 which include four themes, then "World of shadows" in 2007 with two tracks, the third one is "The Path of Sorrows" released in 2009 with three songs and their last demo "Deathwish" came out in 2012 including three more themes, they play some kind of Dark Gothic metal... surprised? well it might be their logo, which fits more to a black metal band, but this is not the case.

During their twelve years of career, they have been through a lots of line-up changes, their current members are founder guitarist and harsh vocals Zlatko Kušter, female vocals Ivana Novak, bassist and backing vocals Filip Babić, lead guitarist Siniša Godinić, drummer Miran Špičko and the keyboardist Rudolf Lovrenčić with this line-up they entered at Mathlab Recording Studio in Italy to produce, record, mixed and mastered their album debut by Jonathan Mazzeo which is titled "Step Into Darkness" it contains ten tracks which are basically a collection of their previous demos and tells the story of Tearless throughout their existence, the album was released in June 29th 2015 under WormHoleDeath Records.

As soon you hear this album you can feel the adrenaline flowing suddenly in your senses and it is not difficult to identify the influences that inspired Tearless to create their music, bands such as Tristania, Moonspell, My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost and The Sins Of Thy Beloved just to name a few, are the ones that defined their path seems like they have picked up the sound of mid-1990s, but with a production more sleek and modern, twenty years have passed since many of us experienced those elements and few bands have been able to revive them and Tearless are one of those few bands.

"Deathwish" opens this album with merciless drums and powerful guitar riff, growl vocals that mangle you ears and Ivana shines with her angelical voice, excellent guitar solo finishing the song at full intensity, "Room of Broken Mirrors" starts with a pretty piano melody that abruptly turns into a storm the clean vocals and harsh vocals blend emotionally, "Fallen We Are" sounds great not just for Ivana's vocals but Filip added an excellent bass line, "Step Into Darkness" the keyboard and guitars blends terrific to let Ivana's voice join while growl backing vocals interwoven with her, "Dreams of You" is the single to promote, again a stunning piano tune allows the guitar solo take over to fuse into a catchy melody clean male vocals are outstanding by Slatko and Ivana as always exceeds the expectatives, the drum section and bass are simply impressive, "Inside Your Raven Eyes" slower and heavy riff more oriented to doom metal, "Masquerade" opens with intense drumming by Miran to let Ivana take the spotlight, the guitars are versatile with good arregements, "As She Leaves Me Alone" loud, passionate very persuasiveness song, "World of Shadows" sets a dark ambience from the beginning, sadness spills from every note, Ivana's voice reflect an aching soul and the fierceness to play each instrument enrapture your soul, the closing track is "Heart of December" prevails in the dark gothic side of Tearless battling vocals between Ivana and Slatko, great guitar work through the song.

I can finally conclude that "Step Into Darkness" is a great album, recommended to all lovers of the genre, may be a formula already known, but the intensity and conviction that they play make this album something worthy to enjoy, if you have the opportunity to listen to them please do not waste it.

Stay True... Stay Metal… Stay Brutal…
