Gives you that atmosphere of evil and devastation that ensures to be memorable

Deströyer 666 is one of the few bands who has reached a cult status, hailing originally from Melbourne, Australia and currently located in London, United Kingdom, the black thrash metal act, is giving signs of life after a period of seven years absence in the studio, when they released their previous album "Defiance" which won an endless rigorous criticism, according to the press by making a slight change compared to their first three albums, but let's move on with what really matters today’s, I'm here to talk about "Wildfire" the fifth album of Deströyer 666, this record essentially has the rawness of vocals, infectious tunes and ripping riffage and conjoined gives you that atmosphere of evil and devastation that ensures to be memorable.

For some reason I have been always thinking of Deströyer 666 as the band who reminds me the old Venom, with their catchy fast riffage, powerful drums and excruciating vocals, that snatch a devilish smile from me and how not? If "Wildfire" highlights many of the elements and qualities that shone on albums like "Raising Phoenix" released in 2000, solidifying their extreme sound or the majestic "Cold Steel ... for an Iron Age" published in 2002 perfecting their intense and malevolent formula of blackened thrash metal.

"Wildfire" somehow has the ability to recreate the adrenaline that flowed at the beginning of the noughties, the opening track "Traitors" with an Araya's-sequel scream and infectious riffage let the hellish assault leaded by K.K. Warlust began, the drums comes in a burst like a storm the track is very fast and merciless, "Live and Burn" still in the same vein every time exposing that rawness they carried with themself, vocals are heavier and chorus works great showcasing a frantic vigor and guitar solos that are able to prickled your skin, then is followed by the instrumental "Artiglio Del Diavolo" which focus on a standard guitar work passing unnoticed in some way, "Deathblow" is another exciting track in this album, seems like every single fast riffing track owns the hooks to get your attention, "Hymns to Dionysus" is fully structure in a melody that stuck in your head, while the ceaseless blast beat drumming excels in this track, "Wildfire" apart to be the first official single that came out, delves in poisonous riff a solid rhythm section and if you have never heard this band before, well this could be a good start, the track is somehow accessible, but still thunderous, the closing tracks are "Die You Fucking Pig!" lyrically a clear statement anti religion, bizarre riffing from the beginning to the end, "Taman Shud" take a different approach with a medium pace the guitar work here is outstanding from simple chords to a superb solo that linger within you, while the track is splitted in two sections due to the use of an interlude that slowdown a bit with undistorted guitar work and a fine drum patterns to reach the highest point of the track and go down again in a subtle manner with stunning choruses work.

I feel incomplete, I don't mean I didn't like how they ended up, but after such overflow of energy, by the end I still have running a lot of blood through my veins, this album have no fillers at all, while some track doesn't make the same effect of the others neither unbalance the rest, I think this album makes an enjoyable  reconciliation with old fans and presents a material with a refreshing sound, "Wildfire" was recorded, mixed and masterized at The Underworld Studios, by Laurent Teubl allowing a clear production where you can hear each instrument, don't let pass the opportunity to listen this album a blackened thrash metal a clear contender for the end year list.

Stay True… Stay Metal… Stay Brutal...

They still offering the same energy and unrelenting thrash death metal of yore

Legendary German band Protector came back with their sixth full length record entitled "Cursed and Coronated", this is their second album after reunited in 2011 and right away they started the songwriting process and by 2013 they released their fifth album titled "Reanimated Homunculus" which honestly knock down everyone around the world, because instead losing the energy and aggressivity they showed since the end of eighties were they put out two great albums "Golem" in 1998 and "Urm the Mad" a year later with their unrelenting thrash death metal, during the nineties was not easy however they were able to released another two albums "A Shedding of Skin" in 1991 and their last studio album by that time "The Heritage" during 1993 but; They were struggling for long time until finally they collapse in 2003, however the flame was not entirely off and Protector came alive more brutal and ruthless than ever.

If we had an extra place for “The Big Teutonic 4”, I would consider (5). And I will definitely put Protector as the fifth band, certainly! You might complaint about it because they haven't been consistent compared to Kreator, Sodom, Destruction or Tankard but Protector have what it takes to be there and their latest two albums can prove my words by itself, because they still offering the same energy and unrelenting thrash death metal of yore and that my friends... is what move the masses around the world.

Protector current lineup is lead by founder member vocalist Martin Missy, drummer Carl-Gustav Karlsson among others (Grief of Emerald and Mastema), guitarist Michael Karlsson also in (Mastema) and bassist, backing vocals Mathias Johansson he plays in (Suicidal Winds and Axis Powers), this formation have been steady since 2005 when they used to be called "Martin Missy and the Protectors".

The CD album "Cursed and Coronated" contains one intro and ten tracks plus three bonus tracks totaling almost fifty-one minutes, the album was recorded at Sunlight Studio in May 2015 by Tomas Skogsberg, mixed and mastered at Temple Of Disharmony by Patrick W. Engel, the cover artwork was designed by Kristian Wåhlin. Out of the ten track included, seven are novel, while the remaining three were previously released, the first of this tracks was "Terra Matter" included in their demo 2011 "The Return of Thrash and Madness", in 2012 the track "The Dirmholt" (which seems to me misspelled) it was released in a split 7 inches vinyl limited edition with the band Erazor and last of this tracks released in 2013 "Xenophobia" in another split 12 inches vinyl with the band Ungod.

The intro infuses some eerie ambiance, with cult drums and ceremonial whispering like invoking a deity, it links rapidly with "Xenophobia" is fast and heavy riffs own the track as the raspy and hellish voice of Missy appears, the drums sounds devastating, "Crosses in Carelia" is another track that sounds heavy and darker with unexpected pace changing, followed by the self-titled track, "Cursed and Coronated" with a simple structure falls into a medium pace but the riffing is sickening, whilst the rhythm section built sounds gloomy but enjoyable, "Six Hours in the Cross" it really contrasts with the previous track, frantic riffage and dispiteous blast beats, with cutthroat vocals, make of this cut a beast, I can clearly define this triplet as the essential core of the album, "The Dimholt" here the band continuous to deliver, the classic German thrash carved by bands like Kreator and Sodom, with exceptional riffs to culminate with a glorious guitar solo, "Terra Matter"  brings a malevolent pace and riffs to obliterate any pseudo-thrash metal from nowadays, "The Old Boil" sounds repulsive and is the last cut in the album, it doesn't feel like a good end, for a moment the bass lines catch me, however the rest goes unnoticed, the bonus tracks are "Intro-Misantrophy", "Sliced, Hacked and Grinded" and "Protector Of Death" all were recorded live at Dresden in 2013, capturing somehow the evil energy that only they are able to displace on stage.

After thirty years and a renewed Protector, still having the fury within them, pulling explosives riffs, strikingly drum pattern and crushing vocals, the production, mixing and mastering are undeniably amazing giving the proper space for each instrument, therefore the result will satisfy the most ardent followers of this Teutonic force and those beginners in the genre, please do not miss this opportunity.

Has everything that a power metal fan is craving for

Wisdom is a power metal band from Budapest, Hungary and they were formed in 2001, so far they have released four albums and "Rise of the Wise" comes to be their latest record, it is so compact and loaded with classic stuff for a melodic power metal band, structure with abundant melodies, guitar riffs and solos, powerful rhythm section, the epical rush inflicted, clean vocals and undeniable catchy choruses, has everything that a power metal fan is craving for, still unconvinced? Well! If your taste goes for bands like early Edguy, HammerFall, Helloween or Sabaton then I'm pretty sure you will enjoy this album.

Despite the album falls in Wisdom traditional songwriting formula and many will probably judging by this, however is not a fatal boredom because has its moments and they know how to capitalize them, by bringing different pace and dynamics to keep you fully engaged to their metal anthems, before we get down to track by track let's see Wisdom current lineup formed by original members Gábor Kovács and Máté Molnár in guitar and bass respectively, complemented by vocalist Gábor Nagy, the drummer Tamás Tóth and the newest addition the guitarrist Anton Kabanen former Battle Beast from the Finnish heavy metal band.

"Over the Wall" opens the album and certainly I don't get the idea with an intro of this magnitude, marching drums and strident guitar work that suddenly stop at nothing and quickly connect with "Raven's Night" which is fast and builds up in melodies the clean vocals by Gábor are perfect and the backing vocals make this track energetic and lead to a superb guitar solo, everything here sound tight and strong, "My Heart is Alive" is a medium pace track with an excellent rhythm section structured between Tamás who is pummeling the drums and Máté in the bass laying dark tunes, choruses embrace this piece and definitely you will end up singing along, let's skip up to "Hero" which star with a folk passage only to exploit with the speed and frantic riffing well known, the double bass drum sounds bold and fearless, super fast guitar solo while charming choruses ends the track, after the second track the album seems fairly balance between fast pace which reflect the intensity and energy captured whilst medium pace embrace the cadence of melodies and diligent onslaughts, Through the Fire" and "Nightmare of the Seas" would fit properly to the description, the last one with somewhat folk-ish vibe, how could we lose a ballad in this album? "Believe in Me" takes care of it, with subtlest acoustic guitar work, interweaving few electric guitar chords and an acceptable guitar solo, "Secret Life" and "Welcome to My History" are relatively medium pace tracks well integrated with the classic sound of power metal, epic riffs, ceaseless double bass drum, choruses and loud guitar solos, while the closing track count with an stellar participation by Sabaton frontman Joakim Broden and quickly injects its essence and tone of voice but; What really hook you to this track is the vocal work of Gábor doing a duet beside Joakim.

So, in the end what we have is a strong continuation of what Wisdom have always been able to do, there is nothing out of their formula, if you are arriving to the genre to experience something unique, I'm afraid you will be disappointed, because Wisdom is a constant machine and so far they haven't pushed out the boundaries, still a good album for power metal lovers but; I’m still not sure if Wisdom will be a force to reckon with in the years to come.

Old school death metal well mixed with classic death ‘n’ roll grooves and raging vocals

Entombed A.D. is a name preceded by itself, it might sound weird; But if we take a look to their trajectory then you will understand, Entombed were pioneers of the Sweden death metal back at the end of the eighties, they released nine full lengths, six EP's and countless split in a span of twenty-four years, until a name dispute arose in 2013, causing that their album "Back to the Front" was delayed until the end of summer of 2014 and released under the moniker Entombed A.D., Century Media Records made this possible, now year and a half later they return with a new album entitled "Dead Dawn" including ten killer tracks.

"Dead Dawn" comes to be a very good album, with solid songwriting, collecting all the elements to create something disturbing and wonderful album that can be clearly placed between the heavy and ruthless "Left Hand Path" and the groundbreaking as well controversial "Wolverine Blues" with its rawness, settle down the roots for what will be known as Death 'n' roll; So, what you can expect is a frantic old school death metal album well mixed with classic death 'n' roll grooves and raging vocals.

From the beginning "Dead Down" will put you back to the early days where Scandinavian Death metal ruled the world, the first track "Midas in Reverse" offer a rich approach to those days with such bizarre guitar riffing corroding through your speakers by Nico Elgstrand, triggering with immeasurable speed and intensity, blasting drums command the ferocious pace. the exceptional vocals by Petrov sounds aggressive and frightening it is what make this track a gem, it's followed by the self-title track "Dead Dawn" with pummeling drums by Olle Dahlstedt to build up tension and a blatant riffage evolves from its barbaric fast pace to a heavy mid pace toward the end, Entombed A.D. doesn't reinvent or revolution anything here, instead they go efficiently for their massively sound of yore, "Total Death" would represent very appropriately what I mean, with sickening guitars, ceaseless drumming without intricate patterns and poisonous vocals brings a fast and cogent guitar solo, "The Winner Has Lost" remain infective as the previous track and deepen with thrash riffs, bassist Victor Brandt delivers an stunning and precise lines to frame a compact rhythm section with pounding drums, while vocals are ranging between growls and half shouts along the track, "Black Survival" is a mid pace song its heavy, dense and merciless, this is exactly what an experienced band is capable to achieve within few minutes a total commotion to your senses, the last track is "Not What It Seems" after a brief exposure of synths and acoustic guitar work, the riffing turn out filthy and dark, as Petrov's roar arrive ominous to devastate compassionless and finishing their work here.

At the end what you get is a pure and straight dose of death metal and although I mentioned before, you may not find anything new or influential, but honestly I could not demand more, I get more than enough with this type of recording, the downside of an album like this one, falls in that it hardly can receive an overrated classification, but still a great album to enjoy.

A thunderous rebirth, relentless, aggressive and enrapturing

Danish band Vanir, were formed around 2009 in the town of Roskilde, originally playing in the vein of Viking metal with folk elements, they have been very proficient releasing three previous full lengths within five years, their debut album "Særimners kød" came out in 2011, resembling bands like Korpiklaani, Alestorm, Finntroll, their sophomore album entitled "Onwards into Battle" was released one year later in 2012 with a more mature sound, heavy riffing and cheerful folktales, their third effort saw the light during 2014 with the title "The Glorious Dead" shifting very slightly their sound adding more death metal riffs to the Viking core and diminishing folk elements, from the beginning they have counted with full support of their record label Mighty Music and after two years waiting finally they released their fourth album "Aldar Rök" featuring a new line-up and redirecting their sound dramatically.

Vanir seems they are totally dropping the folk elements in "Aldar Rök", there is no more bagpipes and whistles, only keyboards remains in a more symphonic scheme, moving into a black metal style darker, frightening and overwhelming, with a little twist at the end, but before proceeding and get into "Aldar Rök" let's meet their current line-up, which still consist of original members Lars Bundvad in bass, Philip Kaaber in rhythm guitar, Martin Håkan in vocals, Daniel Kronskov who recorded, "The Glorious Dead", he remains behind the drums, Kirk Backarach and Stefan Dujardin lead guitar and keyboards respectively, both are joining forces to enrapture Vanir growing fan base.

"Aldar Rök" it might be short containing seven tracks and barely reaching thirty one minutes, but surprisingly the quality balances the experience in all aspects, the first track "Black Legion" immediately start with a darker eerie intro to unchain rabid riffs and relentless double bass drum, all wrapped in ominous synths and guttural vocals, "Pretorian" evolves in a denser and heavier Viking riff intertwined with some tremolo picking guitar, while the synths builds a sound wall in the background, nuanced with devilish choruses to complete the song, "Unrepentant" structured with bells sounds and bass lines to receive, from afar a quiet guitar that become stronger and punitive, always with melodies that shiver deeply in the soul due to the vocal tone, diversified between raspy and growling, next is "Broken Throne", which exploits with a really catchy and melodic riff, with synths that make a an impressive dual soundscapes, the highs and lows inflict an immeasurable level of adrenaline, this track is a beast and is followed for "Wrath of Sutr" it’s appealing a lot of Amon Amarth's distinctive sound, with galloping riffage very well interwoven with symphonic keyboards, very classic in the Viking vein, "The Serpent" is peppered of death black metal riffing, are thick and corrosive the drums draw a remorselessly blast beat pattern to match the pace, the closing track is "Drukvisen" this is more oriented to their roots where Viking and folk were one, same as the energy capture in their two first albums, the intensity of the riffs and blast beats are amusing, excellent for those who would cry over the folk passages buried in "Aldar Rök", the only missing gem here is the absence of Sara Oddershede, who used to handled the bagpipe and whistles, it is a real shame that we could not enjoy her talent in the last track, maybe it would have been a good idea to have had her back as a special guest.

The growth they have shown in this new production is undeniable, at some point very dramatic due to the almost zero appearances of folk elements, in the other hand the length becomes an issue, it is true that the quality compensates a lot but at the end you will be craving for more.

"Grey Heavens" explain by itself with a little risk or nothing the simplicity of elements used and abused

Omnium Gatherum hailing from Finland, this year they are offering their seventh full length "Grey Heavens" loaded with their singular style of Scandinavian melodic death metal, they has been around for the last twenty years, personally I consider this band becoming more notorious after their release "The Redshift" in 2008, which I consider it groundbreaking with promising elements, brightly blend of melodic and atmospheric to create exceptional soundscapes and later on with the strongly and successful "New World Shadows" in 2011, showing a more mature and progressive sound, powerful tunes, with a solid drumming, during 2013 they released "Beyond" which feels somehow static compared to their previous album and pretty much doesn't carry that energy expected.

Unfortunately Omnium Gatherum seems to be the counterpart for their countrymen Children of Bodom or even Insomnium, due to the lack of recognition to their trajectory, no matter how much incisive or expanded have been proved, they are still relegated within the sub-genre and probably "Grey Heavens" explain by itself with a little risk or nothing the simplicity of elements used and abused after "New World Shadows" ending with scattered but redeemable tracks along "Grey Heavens".

So, let's take the first track "The Pit" the clicking gun barrel precede, before hell breaks apart with ultra fast riffing and punishing blast beat and intense melody that settles with choruses, only to lash out remorseless towards the end, "Skyline" its musical structure is more heavier, dense and slower that the previous track, overflowing infectious riffing, growling vocals are stunning in this track, while the moderate use of keyboards works only to enhance and build passages in some sections, without fear this is the best and most emotive song in the album, "Frontiers" follows, here the intensity falls a little bit and melds with an unstoppable melody synths and guitars intertwine in a stellar exhibit where sound clashes and subtly it vanishes at the end, "Rejuvenate" comes with its keyboard base and noxious guitar work, crushing blast beats and pitiless vocals to engage the listener once again and prove them how melodic death metal should be played, "Foundation" is bursting very interesting due to the progressive side of the band but still melodic, the vocals are throaty and powerful, "The Great Liberation" stand out for the dark and imperative use of synths and contrasting with a masterfully guitar work that excels in riffing, last but not least to redeem is the instrumental "These Grey Heavens" beautiful acoustic guitar work evolves with catchy melodies and thrives as memorable and unique.

Unfortunately "Grey Heavens" feels inconsistent and contains many tracks as fillers only, degrading the songwriting and affecting the overall performance of the album, however I can't condemn Omnium Gatherum for been attached so deeply to their equation, newcomers to the sub-genre may be glad with the outcome.

Stay True… Stay Metal… Stay Brutal...

The sound captured in "Rituals" is cohesive and bizarre

Undoubtedly the Greeks Rotting Christ are an iconic band within the genre of metal music, with twenty-nine years in their backs and eleven previous recordings, they throw us their newest production entitled "Rituals", containing eleven cuts very heavy, dark and loaded of cryptic ambience, very ritualistic as it asserts the title of the album by itself, this is an album hard to swallow in a single night once you hit the play button you better be patience to listen song by song until the end with the most open mind to perceive what they have been trying to play for the last decade an unusual blend of extreme, obscure and simplistic metal.

There is nothing wrong with such formula, but over the years tends to be something not surprising at all, the songwriting excels in few songs retaining your attention and for a couple of minutes banishes the monotonous and repetitive sound, due to the pungent riffage, disturbing drums and throaty vocals, the Gregorian chants add a dark vibe and mythic.

The sound captured in "Rituals" is cohesive and bizarre from the beginning you can appreciate it "In Nomine Dei Nostri" with rigorous fluid and crude recited prose immerses you in a dense and macabre atmosphere, "Ze Nigmar" it just extends in the same vein as the previous track with more corrosive guitar work, it is followed by "Elthe Kyrie" fast riffage since the beginning turns to be very infectious with the decadence inflicted and therefore, this is the most catchy cut in the album, saturated in melodies and powerful vocals well mixed with female clean vocals of Danai Katsameni she is an actress of the National Hellenic Theater and she owns the piece in a unique way and leads to excellent guitar solo, I will skip few song just to land in "Les Litanies De Satan" is structured with slow riffing and fast marching drumming, infusing an aggressive sense that allows Vorph (Samael) to infringe raw vocals in french, "For a Voice Like a Thunder" featuring Nick Holmes (Paradise Lost) delivering astonishing spoken words in the background interwoven with the relentless guitar riffing and compact drumming to induce the catharsis, "Devadevam" stand out for the use of Hindu style melodies blended with some kind of atmospheric black metal and embedding of the pseudo Gregorian choirs, "The Four Horsemen" you might think is a cover of the classic Metallica repertoire, but definitely is not! is a mid pace track with somber elements marauding between doom like passages and eerie ambient sound effects beautifully crafted but distant and omnipresent, the closing track is "Lok'tar Ogar" which work more as a filler for me, for the repetitive elements already mentioned.

Tolis Brother's and company has delivered an album that barely reach what I could describe above average, lacking dynamics and repetitive at some point, with a handful of decent tracks that worth the time to listen, I still missing the Rotting Christ of yore and I still playing very often their four first releases, however if you like what they have been playing during the last ten years, I'm sure you will disagree with me and I will be happy if that happen.

Stay True… Stay Metal… Stay Brutal...
