Sammet and company are back with a thunderous and majestic power metal opera

Avantasia the newest album "Ghostlights" turns to be almost unavoidable and challenging at the same time to review, Tobias Sammet and company are back again with their seventh full length plagued with their power metal opera, always accompanied by prominent names in the metal scene such Sharon den Adel, Michael Kiske, Dee Snider, and Geoff Tate just to mention few of them, their sound is essentially a exhibit unrestricted of pretentious musicianship, their quality goes far beyond of what words can express and definitely one of the best shows of metal opera that can be seen these days.

It is probably that many people will argue that "Ghostlights" it lands far away from their mighty opus "The Metal Opera" debut album released back in 2001, or get stranded between "Angel of Babylon" in 2010 and "The Mystery of Time" in 2013, but certainly I can say "Ghostlights" has its own personality, they sound so fresh, so powerful and so passionate, delivering an exciting and complex recording, this time Avantasia took their time to reroute what was missing or over produced, in their latest works avoiding the big orchestral arrangements, as in "The Mystery of Time" they incurred or the excessive ballads to mid-pace shown in "The Scarecrow" and last but not least to mention the lack of metallic edge in "Angel of Babylon"; Well! I believe they succeeded this time bringing something more varied, intense and memorable.

The first track to blast the speakers off is "Mystery of a Blood Red Rose" with a great semi-fast pace riff, contagious choruses and a beautiful guitar solo, it works really good as a preamble to the epic and longest track in the album "Let the Storm Descend Upon You" slightly over twelve minutes with special guest in vocals by Jørn Lande (Jorn), Robert Mason  (Warrant), Ronnie Atkins (Pretty Maids), this track is quite impressive for the huge amount of moods stamped in it, the metallic edge blended with the orchestral arrangements, make this one an essential to listen, "The Haunting" comes unexpected as a storyteller and slow-paced while Dee Snider (Twisted Sister), brings his powerful vocals to this project, "Seduction of the Day" let Geoff Tate (Queensrÿche) to deliver his ostentatious vocal display and of course well appreciated, every track so far let the guest vocalist shine in their own, for me there is no doubt Tobias while he focus in his songwriting, he is able to visualize the singer, it is simply awesome, "Ghostlights" supply the proper dose of power metal that everybody is waiting for the guest vocalist in this track are Michael Kiske (Helloween) and once again the raspy vocals of Jørn Lande, "Draconian Love" is a powerful ballad that exploits with a catchy keyboard and low tune riff to add a depressive feeling which allows to elevate the track with exciting guitars plagued in choruses and the battling vocals between Tobias Sammet and Herbie Langhans (SinBreed) are impressive, "Master of the Pendulum" features Marco Hietala (Nightwish) his fearless and relentless voice takes over the heaviest track in the album, here you can appreciate one of the best guitar solos they could achieved, "Isle of Evermore" is a slow-paced ballad with no other than sweet Sharon Den Adel (Within Temptation) she lends some of the pop style vocals which has been prevailed in her latest recordings, somehow I think they owe us a climax with this track.

"Babylon Vampyres" Sammet goes alone on his own, with fast and sharp riff, pounding drums and catchy melodies, "Lucifer" a stunning track featuring Jørn Lande who is set free to deliver his most brilliant interpretation in the album, "Unchain the Light" is definitely the catchy track in the whole album counting once again with the stellar appearances of Ronnie Atkins and Michael Kiske, excellent guitar work and impressive solo unleashes the adrenaline, "A Restless Heart and Obsidian Skies" brought aboard guest vocalist Bob Catley, the song sounds epic, but a little misplaced, nothing wrong with guest vocalist, but unfortunate to listen this as closing track, the 2CD Digibook includes a bonus track entitled "Wake up to the Moon" and simply can't understand it sounda overdone, dwelling in some generic formula.

The hard part of this album falls in the length by itself the 2CD Digibook version last about 75 minutes, plus 59 minutes the live section, is not easy to devour thirteen tracks at once, you will need patience to really go all the way down to understand what Tobias Sammet and company just made, their power metal opera has emerged again and has been captured all its glory in this album, "Ghostlights" is simply awesome, all the parts blend together with smooth transitions and incorporation of orchestral and metal making this an unique experience.

Crushing riff with guttural vocals explode with authority, certainly giving their own tight and epic label

Vinterblot are a band formed in Apulia, Italy; They started playing around 2008, their music is a blend of Death, Black and Pagan metal, so far; They have released two prior recordings before, "Realms of the Untold" the first one is their independent EP debut entitled "For Asgard" back in 2010 which contains six tracks mostly influenced by the kings of the sub-genre Amon Amarth, you can hear clearly how this EP was conceived, later on they released their first full length "Nether Collapse", early in 2012 under Rising Records, this album is not far away from their sound captured in their EP, but they began to experiment and spread the range, adding a diverse vibe, the riffage still heavy as death metal should be, but they succeed to give an epic approach.

This band has one of the many qualities I appreciate in a metal band, a steady line-up, because I truly believe there is a slightly chance to find the right partners from the beginning and grow with them pursuing the same ambitions, there is nothing wrong with a band who decide to switch members, everything is valid here, either to innovate, to improve, personal reasons or whatever reason you want to add in the list, there is not a predetermined formula, as I stated before Vinterblot started, around 2008 with Fjorgynn and Vandrer on guitars, Eruner in bass, Wolf behind the drums and Kvasir in vocals who was rapidly replaced by Phanaeus, in 2013 Vandrer departs from the band and Auros joined them, with this line-up is how they compose and recorded "Realms of the Untold".

Vinterblot released their second full length "Realms of the Untold" in January 25th, 2016 containing nine tracks and somehow they still dwelling in the same sound, that they developed in their debut album, demolishing heavy and catchy riff, but the Amon Amarth vibe still present there, "Evoked by Light" structured with vicious riff sweep the road to Valhalla, this is a mid-pace track, I still wonder why do they choose this track to open their album? "Frostbitten" it's sound is more aggressive with pounding drums somehow they are able to inflict the speed and intensity but never reach the pinnacle, "The Summoning" picks up a little bit with a catchy melody in the background but again pretty much flat, "Vagrant Spirits in a Misty Rainfall" remains with a dense riffage and some familiar melody, the drums are compelling, "...Of Woods and Omen" brings up an eerie acoustic guitar, it is a nice work that eventually get distorting, to make it even more memorable, "Throne of Snakes" exceptional track from beginning, crushing riff with guttural vocals explode with authority, certainly giving their own tight and epic label, the last track "Triumph Recalls My Name" came out about a year ago as their single, this track is very adventurous and epic, deeper growling vocals are clear enough to sing along, despite the slightly reminiscent of the aforementioned kings of the sub-genre, they were able to manage and leave a mark of something promising in the near future.

Vinterblot has the desire to cause an impress, but unfortunately didn't work for me very well, regardless the mixed and mastered by the legendary Swedish Producer and Artist Dan Swanö (Opeth, Dissection, Edge of Sanity and many more!), I believe they fail to balance the album, the first two thirds are pretty much flat, senseless, until the last third, right there is when I felt hooked by them, but you guys make your own choice and I really hope you disagree with me.

Stay True… Stay Metal… Stay Brutal...

Track List:

1. Evoked by Light

This is exactly what you expect from a seasoned power metal band simplicity, melody and chorus

German band Brainstorm delivered their eleventh album last January 15, 2016 entitled "Scary Creatures" featuring their classic Power metal well known and appreciated by their fans, this is band very underrated, I honestly unknown the reason, it might be the fact that Brainstorm opted to play a merely traditional line of Power metal, if I have to mention few acts to make you become more familiar, I could name bands such Blind Guardian, Symphorce or Gamma Ray.

It is true that Brainstorm discography is wide but not always consistent, sometimes doesn't linger in you, because their own sound is simply like that, few albums that I could put in a safe place, will be "Ambiguity" released in 2000, "Soul Temptation" in 2003, "Downburst" from 2008 and "Firesoul" released less than two years ago, definitely "Scary Creatures" comes in this list too, why? because their sound is more bold, energetic and replete of solid riff and galloping rhythms, it have all you are waiting for in a power metal album, Brainstorm lineup has been solid for the last couple 5 releases, it's formed as follows Andy B. Franck (Vocals), Milan Loncaric (guitars & backing vocals), Dieter Bernert (drums), Torsten Ihlenfeld (guitars and backing vocals) and Antonio Ieva (bass), this could be the spark that lights their newest record.

The first track in this album is "The World to See" open with a little orchestral intro before get into havoc with their genuine riff and cataclysmic double bass drum, while Andy B. Franck owns a powerful and unique voice he keeps in the halftone range, unlike other singers within the genre who prefer the high pitch vocals, "How Much Can You Take" follows with nicely and crushing riff, the drums draws a steady and solid pattern that allows the bass to rumble through the speakers, "We are..." here we can appreciate how simplicity can succeed with few riff, they effortlessly create a memorable track with catchy choruses, "Where Angels Dream"; Here, things are getting better and better, they speed up the pace to gain a contrasting sound compared to the previous tracks, the self titled album track is structured with grooving riff, "Caressed by the Blackness" with pretentious drums allows to build solid riff and a very neat rhythmic section by bass, creating a wall of grave tunes in the background, the last track is "Sky Among the Clouds" is exactly what you expect from a seasoned Power metal band, simplicity, melody and chorus, the CD limited edition digipak includes a bonus track titled "Lift Your Eyes to See", it’s powerful and does not disappoint at all, also this version comes with a DVD which was recorded at Turock, Essen (Germany) on April 5th, 2014, during their "Souls of Fire Tour".

"Scary Creatures" certainly exceeds anyone's expectations, it might not be the greatest band with high pitch vocals, thunderous and vertiginous riff at full speed and all the glamour that precede many bands within the genre, No! They chose the opposite path and have walked steady and sure of themselves for more than two decades, if you decide to go with them, you will not regret it.

Unrestrained grindcore savagery and meticulously crafted technical death metal

Aborted has been around for over twenty years, their career is one of the most solid and brutal in the worldwide scene, backing them up eight full lengths, three splits and three previous extended plays, being "Termination Redux" their fourth EP released to date, always with their unrestrained grindcore savagery and meticulously crafted technical death metal, this record includes five tracks, a short intro, three unreleased tracks and a reinvented and extended version of their classic "The Holocaust Incarnate" it’s included in their second full length "Engineering the Dead" from 2001.

"Termination Redux" it works as a showcase for their upcoming new release "Retrogore" which is set to be released next April 22, 2016 under Century Media Records and believe me this is more than a simple EP, all the tracks you can hear here, only one will make it to be included in their ninth album.

"Liberate Me Ex Inferis" a brief intro which last about half minute and unleash all their fury in "Termination Redux" rapid and repulsive riff strikes merciless, the drums are handled in a dynamic pattern with a varied paced from blast beat to grinder and chaotic sections, the menacing vocals are aggressive, outstanding guitar work amidst the track, followed by "Vestal Disfigurement Upon the Sacred Chantry" continuous the savagery created in the previous track, "Bound in Acrimony" blend some death thrash riffage with some breakdowns that make this track enjoyable, in last but not least is "The Holocaust Re-Incarnate" has a fresh approach with a modern production this version keeps their twist and turns from blasting parts going through grooving sections, this is a must hear track.

Definitely, Aborted delivers a heavy, fast and relentless piece, which turns in a great achievement for the band, if your likes are Suffocation, Cattle Decapitation or Misery Index, then this EP should be in your playlist.

Stay True… Stay Metal… Stay Brutal...

Sea of Ignorance remains in the old school death metal from Florida

Well! here we go again, Brutality is a death metal band that has decided to revive their career after the 2013, releasing two demos and an EP early in 2013 entitled "Ruins of Humans" under the label Ceremonial Records, but let's recap their history of this band, that dates back to 1987 when they officially began their career under their current moniker, they released their first demo called "Abomination" in 1988, then they released their second demo "Brutality" during the same year, which led them into the fanzine underground, the band's third demo "Dimension Demented" was recorded in 1990 and was later released as a 7 inch EP titled "Hell On Earth" by Gore Records in 1992. "Metamorphosis" recorded in 1991 was the band's fourth demo which had a worldwide distribution by Wild Rags Records.

At this point the band made some lineup changes which made the band's sound even more brutal; they proceeded to record a demo to pursue a record deal. finally they signed with Nuclear Blast Records, in 1992 they released a 7 inch EP called "Sadistic" later on they recorded their debut album "Screams of Anguish" in 1993, by mid of 1994 a second album was released titled, "When the Sky Turns Black" their third album "In Mourning" was released in 1996, the band split up in 1997.

So today Brutality present us their fourth album "Sea of Ignorance" containing eight tracks with the same old school death metal from Florida, at some point seems like they picked up where they left, for some reason I don't understand, they are some of the most underrated death metal acts, their current lineup is formed by Jeff Acres (bass and backing vocals), Jay Fernandez (guitars), Scot Reigel (vocals) and Ruston Grosse (drums), the album begins with the homonymous album track fast, trepidant riff that shakes the ground, solid bass while the drums delivers endless and aggressive blast beats possessed by the double bass drum, "48 to 52" is the second track full of anger and contempt ceaseless drums doesn't allow you to take your breath back, "Fatal Cure" carries with itself a brutal rhythm riffing while the lead guitar performs an insane solo, "Tribute" approach with a different view adding some mid to slow paced, generating a well structured track of death and doom, "Perpetual Resolution" and "Barbarically Beheaded" fall into a generic death metal that doesn't move anything around, despite their expertise the sound is a bit dull, I will skip for a moment up to the last track "End of Days" articulated with solid tremolo picked rhythm and the most devastating guitar solo included in the album make this track an exceptional end, however I have to rewind and listen again, "Shores in Flames" for some reason Brutality decide to cover Quorthon and his epic song. But; As much as hear something is missing here, it might be me who exaggerates, but their interpretation falls short and does not do justice to the original track, It could have been a good idea to leave it for last as a bonus track and not interrupt the flow was carrying the album, but it's already done.

Brutality is considered an influential band from the dawning of the Death Metal scene in the US, I think they could’ve done a better job on some of their music, is a good comeback to the scene but they still have things to sort out before to reclaim for their respect and a throne in the scene.

Stay True… Stay Metal… Stay Brutal...

Nordjevel self title album brings back the kind of relentless and aggressive black metal from over twenty years ago

Nordjevel is a brand new black metal band hailing from Ostfold, Norway formed by  vocalist Doedsadmiral (Svartelder) and guitarist Nord (Tvangeste) in the spring of 2015 after they found out they had so much in common, they started playing together and later on, they extended an invitation to drummer Fredrik Widigs (Marduk) to complement the lineup with bassist DezeptiCunt (Quadrivium), what you can expect here is literally is a dose from the second wave of black metal, with infectious tremolo picked, a hellish drum blast beat, a frantic and ravenous bass that melds their sound alluring to create a more melodic essence, the vocals are utterly impressive growls and shrieks are ceaseless through the album.

For me it is inevitable to compare with albums like "Opus Nocturne" from Marduk released in 1994 or debut album "Pentagram" by Gorgoroth released in the same year, both containing the intensity and rawness that represent that era, Nordjevel self titled debut album brings back to me those memories and feelings when I used to hear this kind of relentless and aggressive black metal from over twenty years ago, I might not be the only one thinking about it, because this sound lead the band, to ink a deal with Osmose Productions to released their first work.

The album opens with "The Shadows of Morbid Hunger" it carries a howling wind to set your mind for the chaos heading to you, fast tremolo picked, topped off with powerful double bass drum and blast beat that entangles you in a black abyss devilish shrieks vocals announces the hell is close the mid section slows down to let the bass rumble for a second, but before you can react they charges back again with indiscriminate hostility, next is "Sing for Devastation" it swirls with a mid pace tremolo incorporating melodies in their structure but the infectious growls remind us where we are, "Djevelen I Nord" keeps the path as the previous song delving with more melodic riff, while the drums draw a diverse pattern without losing the fury and intensity, "The Funeral Smell" with prominent fast ripping tremolo rhythm and chaotic blasting drums takes you for a frantic ride to hell, "Denne Tidløse Krigsdom" the sirens announce, that we have reached a point of no return and you can smell the ashes coming from the infernal regions, "Blood Horns" It doesn't any different approach keeps up with relentless tremolo picked at full speed while the shrieks vocals remain worshiping and the drum section does not reroute its devastation, "Det Ror Og Ror" the aesthetics of this track falls into the melody easily recognizable amidst the turmoil in their structure, "Når Noen Andre Dør..." is just the preamble to the album end with ravenous intensity never stop in their purpose inflicting poisonous riff and make you tremble in fear, "Norges Sorte Himmel" is the closing track, martial drums interact with a mid pace galloping rhythm riff and the lead guitar extends with a singular melody, evoking to be a guitar solo along the track, the end a little disappointing for the piano that does not seem to fit very well in this type of albums, the CD limited edition digipak contains, a bonus track "Raining Blood", Nordjevel decided to cover the mighty Slayer with a short and invariable sound of the original one, I'm afraid to say it, but; somehow breaks the balance and conception of this album.

Anyway this is a great album for a newly formed band, which is not so original but at least they play with such conviction, taking good care to the minimal details in songwriting and arrangements, using ferocious tremolo picked, disturbing blast beat and vocals to makes shiver your soul, there are few flaws in the end, that prevent this album be an excellent recording but other than that, it will be a band to remember at the end of the year.

Stay True… Stay Metal… Stay Brutal...

Pillars of Ash is a swamp-tastic sludge metal, infected with crust punk

Tragedy has marked the past of this band, as everyone in the metal scene read or heard before, Jonathan Athon passed away on November 9th 2014 due to sustained injuries in a motorcycle accident, it was indeed regrettable and the future of Black Tusk seemed to fade away in a maze for an instant, however in times of adversity is when the strength, the passion and the courage prevails, being all the Athon's parts already recorded, his band mates James May (drums and backing vocals) and Andrew Fidler (guitars and backing vocals) were able to set the final touches to their latest album which was titled "Pillars of Ash" this album is the fourth full length in their discography and turns out to be a swamp-tastic sludge metal, infected with crust punk.

For over a decade Savannah, Georgia has treated us as never before, musically speaking first we meet Kylesa, then Baroness and last but not least Black Tusk, these three bands have forged that sound so distinctive and we have become more familiar to the Swamp metal and "Pillars of Ash" in my opinion keeps the path already traced in their previous album "Set the Dial" back in 2011 but this occasion their sound is a little more raw and aggressive, offering an emblematic record within the genre.

"Pillars of Ash" bring to us 11 tracks fully energetic, ranging from hardcore going through a heaviness and distortion which is spiced up with some crust punk, the outcome can be heard since the first track "God's on Vacation" with a distinctive drum that precedes a corrosive guitar riff with screamed vocals, "Desolation of Endless Times" with a deeper groove that guarantees an unstoppable headbanging, "Bleed on Your Knees" a blend of rock and metal, "Born of Strife" with a relentless thrashy and faster riff, start to put things upside down it is almost indescriptible the feeling that "Pillars of Ash" is able to produce, "Black Tide" seems to be the link that holds the transition from one end to the other with powerful riff and defying drums, "Still not Well" with a raw sound certainly confronts the band with its own roots, while "Walk Among the Sky" succumbs to the speed of the initial riff but subtly turns into an explosive sing along, great for a closing live performance, "Punkout" dare to busting your speakers with a terrific bass work, a total indulgent hardcore, the last track is "Leveling" shredding guitars that doesn't last as you would expect, leading to a piano outro and works more as a filler in the album,  I think they could have omitted the last track and maybe it would have the same impact.

Black Tusk delivers 35 minutes which emphasizes the insertion of rock, metal and punk with a singular dynamic ensuring a high repeatability in your playlist, this is a good album, solid and contemporary without noticeable flaws but will transcends as one of the finest within their discography and as a turning point in their career, Black Tusk actually are hitting the road with Corey Barhorst doing bass and vocals along with Holy Grail and The Well, don't miss your chance to see them live.
